Day 58 - Paris II

I must have walked for at least 20 kilometers my first day in Paris. I started from Gare de Lyon (the hotel was right next to it) and went to Notre Dame. Tried to get in, but the line was way too long. Went to Louvre from there, then through Jardin des Tuileries to Chapms Elysees. Kept going until Arc de Triomphe, and then went to Montmartre. Got lost trying to find Sacre Coeur - there isn't a single straight street in Paris, and since Montmartre is a hill, the buildings can block the view quite efficiently.

After finally finding Sacre Coeur, I spent some time on Montmartre and then got back down and walked to Centre Pompidou. One of the best museums ever - highly recommend! Plus, there was almost no line :)

By the time I left Pompidou it was already getting late, and I started going towards the hotel. I was walking by Notre Dame when I saw the sign that said that the access to the towers is open until 11 PM on Saturdays. I couldn't pass the chance to see the gargoyles up close - after all, it's only 400-something steps! I must be developing an unhealthy obsession with climbing up narrow spiral stairs... I never regret it though, and Notre Dame was particularly wonderful. I got a chance to meet lots of its inhabitants - very fascinating creatures.

I did go back to the hotel (passing by Bastille again) when I finally got down.

Is this Notre Dame? I think that's where all the statue guys were decapitated during the Revolution (it's the Gallery of Kings, which the revolutionaries took to mean Kings of France, although they're actually biblical kings). They made replacement heads, and then the real heads turned up in some guy's garden. The originals are in a museum now and these are still the replacements.
